“Oh, my love, my darling, I’ve hungered for your touch.” You didn’t read those words; you hummed Unchained Melody. And you likely saw Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze at a pottery wheel. Several different orchestras came together in the town of Bremen, Germany, to perform a cover of the cinematic song, and it was magical.
Like the movie, the notes begin to play, but this time it is a solo trumpet that leads the fray. The mood is set; soft, romantic, and sultry. The orchestra members are all decked out in their dapper military uniforms, and each orchestra gets a chance to shine.
After all the brass instruments, including a sousaphone, start playing, you can hear the drums. Then, along comes the soothing sound of the clarinet—a soft timbre to bring home the tune’s tenderness. Even the Righteous Brothers are humming along.
These military orchestras, in full uniform, packed an entire stadium. The sight itself is almost as impressive as the sound. This event was a fantastic opportunity to bring together diverse orchestras and have them create something lovely. It must have taken considerable time to coordinate this, and it is a testament to the fact that “time can do so much.”
