“You Light Up My Life” Is Debby Boone’s Epic ‘70s Hit That’ll Make You Cry

Gospel quartet singer Debby Boone became an international superstar when she was given the opportunity to sing “You Light Up My Life.”

Debby Boone was called upon to sing “You Light Up My Life” in 1977 for the feature film of the same name by songwriter-producer Joe Brookes. It was her very first solo performance, and the track went straight to number one on the Hot 100.

This song was, without a doubt, the greatest hit of 1977. Not only did it spend ten weeks at number one it also won Debby Boone the Grammy for Song of the Year and Best New Artist.

Debby Boone had to work quickly to put together enough tracks to create her debut album after “You Light Up My Life” hit number one. Despite there being other tracks including the Oscar-nominated “When You’re Loved,” nothing compared to this smash hit.
