“It’s Raining Men” – The LGBT Anthem That Was Almost Never Made

The Weather Girls hit it big with their timeless track “It’s Raining Men” from 1982. It is loved all around the world, with the sensational song making a long impact on the LGBT community.

There’s no gay anthem more popular than “It’s Raining Men” from The Weather Girls, but Martha Wash says that the song almost never got made. The whole world is happy that the 70s-style electronic dance hit infusing disco with R&B and soul did indeed arrive.

“It’s Raining Men” was offered to a host of other gay icons, including Cher, Barbara Streisand, and Diana Ross, but Martha Wash and Izora Armstead were approached, and the rest is history.

Songwriter Paul Jabara who wrote Streisand’s “The Main Event/Fight” and Donna Summer’s “Last Dance,” insisted that the duo was perfect for this song, and he was right.
