Usher Returns To Gospel With “Amazing Grace” Tribute For Kobe Bryant

During the Celebration of the Life of Kobe Bryant, Usher opened the ceremonies by singing a heartrending version of “Amazing Grace.” When loss of this magnitude comes along, it’s beautiful to see someone pour all their emotions into their song, and speak, in a small way, for all of us.

On January 26, 2020 sports fans across the globe were crushed to hear that Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna had lost their lives in a terrible plane crash. The Lakers along with his fans gathered at Staples Center on February 24th to pay tribute to the man who wore the 24 and touched so many.

To start off the ceremonies, Usher stood on the hardwood, flanked by the numbers 8 and 24 — the numbers Gianna and Kobe wore when they played — and sang a heartrending version of “Amazing Grace.” He poured everything he was feeling into the performance, and through it allowed us all to vicariously deal with just a bit of our grief.
