Fifth season winner, Mississippi born Michael Grimm returns to the America’s Got Talent stage to compete in the Champions series. Time has evolved his rich sound, and the artist made a fitting song choice. ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ by Etta James is recreated into something that is true to his heart and ideal for his soul, but one of our judges didn’t agree.
In near-total darkness, Michael begins to sing before gently strumming his guitar. It’s a beautiful start to the classic, immediately showcasing how distinct this star’s voice is. Raw emotion like his is hard to find, with his warm, honest tone encompassing all the emotion one could ever hope for. While the rest of the panel loved his delivery, Simon wasn’t happy saying, “Michael, you are a very nice, sincere, humble person. However, I didn’t like the song. It’s a safe song.”
‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ by Etta James takes a lot of soul, and that is exactly what Michael Grimm arrived ready to deliver on America’s Got Talent: The Champions. The star confesses to being nervous, but one can barely detect anything but greatness throughout. It seems you can’t please everyone, but his rendition is undeniably a champion performance.
